A message from a school that doesn’t teach

At Aoba-Japan Bilingual Preschool, (AJBP) we wish for our children to have fruitful lives, no matter where in the world they may be in the future. As children in the 21st century, our goal is for them to learn to express themselves with creative thoughts.

To achieve this, our approach is student centered and inquiry-based. We want children to seek answers on their own. Instead of providing teacher-centered classes, we believe the following factors are the indispensable qualities to successful learning:

Learning By Doing – Learning by pursuing their thoughts and actions
Learning Through Communication- Learning through interaction between friends and classmates
Learning From Mistakes – Learning from failures. Independent actions without interference are encouraged so that they learn from their failures.

None of these mean that children are not taught anything or that teachers are not significant. Instead, the teacher’s role is to be a guide for children’s learning experience. We want them to think, challenge, and to express themselves in their early years. With our support, they develop curiosity and self-efficacy, and this becomes an ongoing source of motivation to learn more. It ultimately leads to the pursuit of lifelong learning.

In order to incorporate this, Aoba has adopted the principles of the International Baccalaureate Programme. The IB, based entirely on the principles of student-centered and inquiry-based learning, is now a well-established international education standard.

We are not an international school, which means we do not expect children’s first language to be English. Instead, we are a bilingual school. We think that the mother tongue is just as important. Since culture, knowledge, and understanding are so dependent on language, we believe that bilingualism not only motivates greater development, but also opens doors to the global world. We now have four bilingual schools in Tokyo. There are almost no other IB-based bilingual schools for infants that focus on English and Japanese.

We are very pleased to open our new school, Aoba-Japan Bilingual Preschool (AJB) in the Nakano area, and we look forward to being a part of your children’s growth!
